Chapter 12
The Trial of Fire
Elara must recreate a specific traditional dish using the suspect ingredients, a dangerous process meant to reveal hidden truths or trigger a reaction.
The air in the communal kitchen hung thick with the scent of woodsmoke and anticipation. Elara, her brow furrowed in concentration, carefully arranged the peculiar ingredients on the worn oak table. The vibrant scarlet of the moonpetal bloom, the gnarled roots of the shadowfern, and the iridescent scales of the river serpent seemed to pulse with a life of their own under the flickering lamplight. Chef Dubois’s cryptic notes, scrawled on parchment stained with what looked suspiciously like berry juice, lay open beside her. This wasn't just cooking; it was alchemy, a ritualistic dance with ingredients that held the village’s history within their very fibers.
