He endures frequent beatings and harsh verbal assaults, constantly told he is a disappointment and will never amount to anything. The weight of these words and the physical pain crush his spirit, eroding his self-worth. Each day is a battle for survival, a desperate attempt to avoid his father's wrath. The constant negativity and violence create a suffocating atmosphere, extinguishing any embers of hope Charles might have held for a better life.

The air in our row house was thick, not just with the perpetual North Philly grime that settled on everything, but with a tension that coiled and tightened with every passing hour. My father, Marcus, “The Serpent” to those who knew his name on the asphalt and in the smoky back rooms, was home. And when Marcus was home, the world tilted on its axis, usually towards a jagged, painful edge. He’d shed his biker colors, the worn leather jacket that seemed to be a second skin, but the aura of the Wheels of Soul MC clung to him like a stubborn stain. It was a scent of stale beer, motor oil, and something darker, something that made the hairs on my arms prickle.

I was eleven, but felt a hundred years old, my small frame perpetually hunched, trying to shrink myself into oblivion. My mother, Lena, was a ghost in her own life, her days a blur of hushed transactions and vacant stares. She rarely saw me, not really. I was just another obstacle, another mouth to feed in a world where mouths were a liability. My sister, Sarah, bless her, had escaped our orbit years ago, a small, bright bird taken under my grandparents’ wing. I hadn’t seen her since I was a toddler, and the memory of her was like a faded photograph, a hazy promise of a different kind of family.

Today, the storm was brewing. It started with a misplaced wrench, a tool my father swore he’d left on the workbench. His voice, a gravelly rumble that could shift from deceptively calm to a thunderclap in an instant, echoed through the narrow hallway.
