A Tangled Web of Suspicions

The worn wooden planks of the Casewhill Elementary gymnasium creaked under the weight of their hurried footsteps. Kyle and Lucca, fueled by a potent cocktail of adrenaline and the faint scent of floor wax, skidded to a halt near the bleachers. They’d spent the better part of the morning meticulously mapping out the school’s labyrinthine hallways, their notebook filled with a growing web of names, times, and whispered observations. Samira’s locket, that small, heart-shaped trinket imbued with the warmth of her grandmother’s memory, had vanished from her unlocked locker sometime between third and fourth period. And now, the initial flurry of questions had yielded a tangled mess of contradictory accounts, each student’s recollection a slightly different shade of truth.

“Okay, let’s go over it again,” Kyle said, his voice a low murmur, his brow furrowed in concentration. He tapped his pencil against the notebook, the graphite leaving faint smudges on the already-dampened paper. “Mrs. Davison says she saw Samira heading towards the library at the end of third period. Then, Mr. Harrison remembers seeing her near the art room just before the bell for fourth period rang.”

Lucca nodded, his gaze sweeping across the empty gym, as if the answers might be scrawled on the dusty basketball hoops. “That’s the problem, right? The library and the art room are on opposite sides of the school. And she definitely said she went straight back to her locker after Mrs. Davison’s class.” He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair. “Unless… unless she *didn’t* go straight back. Maybe she went to the library *first* and then to the art room, and then to her locker?”
