It painted long shadows that stretched and danced across the worn linoleum floor of the Casewhill Elementary library, where Kyle and Lucca sat hunched over a stack of case files. The air, usually buzzing with the quiet murmur of turning pages or the hushed whispers of students seeking advice, held a distinct air of finality. The school year was winding down, a gentle sigh before the boisterous eruption of summer vacation.

Kyle traced a finger over a faded photograph clipped to one of the files – Samira’s locket, nestled back in its rightful place around her neck. He remembered the initial anxiety that had clouded Samira’s face, the hesitant way she’d explained the disappearance, the ripple of distrust that had spread through their small community. It felt like a lifetime ago, though it had only been a few months.

“Remember how nervous we were?” Lucca mused, his voice barely a whisper, as if not to disturb the ghosts of past investigations. He leaned back in his chair, a rare moment of stillness for him, his gaze drifting towards the shelves overflowing with stories. “Like, what if we messed up? What if Samira never got her locket back?”
