The air in the abandoned art studio hung thick and still, carrying the faint, dusty scent of forgotten canvases and dried-out paint. Kyle traced the rim of his empty juice box, his brow furrowed in concentration. The unsolved case, the one that had left them feeling like amateurs fumbling in the dark, gnawed at him. Chapter 12 had ended with a collective sigh of frustration, a stark reminder that not every mystery unraveled with easy grace. The vanishing art supplies, a seemingly simple case of missing easels and brushes, had spiraled into a labyrinth of dead ends. They’d interviewed every student who’d used the studio, interrogated the janitorial staff, and even scoured the school’s lost and found with a fine-tooth comb, all to no avail. The supplies had simply evaporated, leaving behind only a void and a growing sense of inadequacy.

Lucca, ever the optimist, was attempting to inject some levity into the situation. He was balancing a ruler on his nose, his eyes squeezed shut in mock concentration. "Maybe they sprouted legs and walked away," he declared, the ruler wobbling precariously. "Or perhaps a rogue art critic snuck in overnight and declared everything 'too derivative' and carted it off for proper disposal."

Kyle offered a weak smile, but his gaze remained fixed on the bare walls of the studio. He knew Lucca was trying to lighten the mood, but the weight of their failure felt heavy. He had a secret worry that he’d never voiced to anyone, not even Lucca: the fear that he wasn’t as good a detective as he pretended to be, that his keen eye for detail was just a fluke, and that he’d ultimately let his friends down. This case was proving that fear wasn't entirely unfounded.
