Commander's Concern

Commander Jian Li’s brow was perpetually furrowed, a landscape carved by the relentless demands of the Stardust and the disquiet that had settled upon him like the cosmic dust clinging to their hull. The hum of the engineering bay, usually a comforting lullaby, had taken on a discordant note in recent cycles. He traced a gloved finger along a conduit, his eyes scanning the readouts flickering on his wrist-mounted display. Power fluctuations. Not significant enough to trigger alarms, not yet, but there. A persistent, almost imperceptible drain, like a phantom limb aching in the ship’s very core.

He tapped a sequence into a nearby console, his movements economical and precise. The diagnostic report scrolled across the screen, a cascade of green indicators that belied the subtle wrongness he felt. Everything *should* be operational. The repairs to the life support, the recalibration of the navigation arrays after their jarring entry into this dead sector – all completed, all nominal. Yet, the energy reserves felt… lighter. Thinner.
