The hum of the Stardust’s life support, once a comforting lullaby of existence, now felt like a strained whisper against the oppressive silence of the alien behemoth. Dr. Aris Thorne, his face illuminated by the faint glow of a holographic display, traced the intricate patterns of the alien script with a fingertip that trembled not with fear, but with an almost feverish excitement. His usual detached amusement had evaporated, replaced by an intensity that bordered on obsession.
“It’s not a distress signal,” he announced, his voice echoing slightly in the cavernous chamber. Captain Eva Rostova stood beside him, her arms crossed, her gaze fixed on the swirling symbols that seemed to writhe on the projection. Commander Jian Li, ever the pragmatist, was hunched over a console, his brow furrowed as he monitored the Stardust’s dwindling power reserves. Sergeant Lena Hanson, her hand resting near the sidearm at her hip, stood a few paces back, her eyes sweeping the shadows of the chamber as if expecting something to materialize.
“Explain, Doctor,” Eva said, her tone level, betraying none of the gnawing unease that had settled deep within her bones since they’d entered this sector. The phantom whispers, the fleeting shadows in her peripheral vision – they were becoming too frequent, too insistent.
