The air inside the alien vessel felt thicker, heavier, than it had moments before. A strange stillness had settled, a silence that pressed in on the eardrums, making the faintest scuff of a boot on the metallic floor sound like a thunderclap. Captain Rostova adjusted the beam of her helmet lamp, its light glinting off the impossibly smooth, dark surfaces of the chamber they had stumbled into. It was unlike anything they had encountered so far – less a room and more a vast, cavernous space that seemed to absorb sound and light.
Dr. Thorne, his eyes wide with an almost feverish excitement, ran a gloved hand over a recessed panel. “Remarkable,” he breathed, his voice a hushed reverence. “The material… it’s unlike any alloy I’ve ever encountered. It’s almost organic in its texture.”
Commander Li, ever the pragmatist, kept his back to the main entrance, his own light sweeping the perimeter. “Organic or not, it’s holding together after… how long has it been? Millennia?” He paused, his gaze fixed on a series of intricate etchings that spiraled across the wall. “These aren’t just decorative, Aris. They tell a story.”
