Chapter 1

Maya and Rohan discover a glowing mushroom in the Forgotten Woods that grants them each a small magical gift—Maya can heal small cuts and Rohan can find lost things—but a broken branch and a vanishing light hint at something darker watching them.

"Did you hear that?"

Maya froze mid-step, her hand gripping Rohan's sleeve. The Forgotten Woods had felt empty a moment ago—just the usual crunch of leaves and the distant chatter of birds—but now a low hum vibrated through the ground, like a giant's whisper trapped underground.

Rohan strained his ears. "It's coming from the old oak."

They crept forward, careful not to snap any twigs. The oak's roots bulged above the earth, tangled with silver moss that seemed to glow faintly in the afternoon light. At the base of the trunk, a small mushroom pulsed with a soft blue light, its cap no bigger than Maya's thumb.

"I've never seen anything like it," Maya whispered. Her fingers itched to touch it, but she held back.

Rohan knelt, his brown eyes wide. "It looks like it's breathing."

The mushroom's glow brightened as they watched, casting their shadows long across the forest floor. Maya felt a strange pull in her chest, like the air itself was leaning toward the mushroom, inviting her closer.

"Should we pick it?" she asked.

"I don't know. What if it's dangerous?"

But even as Rohan said it, his hand reached out. The moment his fingers brushed the mushroom's cap, a jolt of warmth shot up his arm. The light flared, enveloping them both, and Maya felt a tingling sensation spread through her body, starting from her heart and branching into her hands.

Then the light vanished.

The mushroom was gone, leaving only a small circle of scorched earth.

"What just happened?" Maya gasped, her skin still prickling.

Rohan stared at his palm. A faint silver symbol—a spiral—glowed on his skin for a second before fading. "I think... I can feel something. Like a thread in my mind, pulling toward something lost."

Maya looked down at her own hands. The same symbol marked her palms, but hers felt different—warmth pooled there, as if waiting to be released.

"Try it," she said.

Rohan closed his eyes, concentrating on the thread. It tugged him to the left, toward a thick patch of brambles. He pushed through the thorns, ignoring the scratches on his arms, and dug into the soft soil beneath. His fingers closed around something cold and hard—a small silver locket, tarnished with age.

"I found it," he said, his voice filled with wonder. "It was lost for years. I think it belonged to someone in the village."

Maya took the locket, turning it over. A tiny engraving read: "To Elara, always." She felt the warmth in her hands pulse, and without thinking, she pressed her palm against a deep scratch on her arm from the walk. The scratch faded, leaving unblemished skin.

"You healed yourself," Rohan breathed.

"I didn't mean to. It just... happened."

They sat in the clearing, examining their new abilities. Rohan could sense any lost object within a hundred paces—he proved it by finding a dropped coin, a bird's feather, and a child's marble hidden under a rock. Maya could heal small wounds and ease pain, though the effort made her tired, as if the warmth was a limited resource.

"This is amazing," Rohan said, grinning. "We can help people now. Really help them."

Maya nodded, but a knot of worry tightened in her stomach. "Why did the mushroom choose us? And what if there are more like it?"

"We should find out," Rohan said. "Tomorrow, we can search the rest of the woods. Maybe there's a pattern, or a purpose."

They started walking back toward the village, the locket heavy in Maya's pocket. The sun was dipping below the trees, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. Just as they reached the edge of the woods, a sharp crack echoed behind them—like a branch breaking under a heavy foot.

They spun around.

The forest was still. But in the growing shadows, something moved. A shape, darker than the trees, slid between two trunks and vanished.

"We need to go," Maya whispered, pulling Rohan forward.

They ran, not stopping until they burst onto the main path of Ashford Village. The street was quiet, lit by lanterns, the familiar smell of cooking fires drifting from the cottages. Maya leaned against a fence, catching her breath.

"Do you think it followed us?" Rohan asked, his voice shaky.

"I don't know. But we have to be careful. Whatever gave us these gifts... it might want them back."

Rohan looked at his palm, the symbol invisible now. "Then we learn how to use them first. And we find out who—or what—is watching."

Maya nodded, her heart still racing. She touched the locket in her pocket, feeling its cool metal. The first step was clear: find Elara, return the locket, and see if their new powers were a blessing or a burden.

But as she turned toward home, a faint blue light flickered at the edge of the woods, just for a second, before dying out. Something was waiting. And it knew where they lived.
