The aroma of cinnamon and burnt sugar, a familiar perfume of Penny’s emotional turbulence, hung heavy in her small kitchen. It was a testament to her latest baking disaster, a batch of cookies that had somehow managed to char on the edges while remaining stubbornly doughy in the middle. Much like her dating life, really. She sighed, scraping the blackened circles into the bin with a theatrical flourish. Chloe, perched on a stool nursing a mug of tea that was probably lukewarm by now, offered a sympathetic grimace.

“Another batch of charcoal briquettes, eh?” Chloe’s voice was laced with the familiar blend of amusement and genuine concern that Penny had come to cherish. “Perhaps we should just stick to store-bought for the bake sale. Less chance of third-degree burns.”

Penny flopped onto a chair, running a flour-dusted hand through her already messy bun. “It’s not just the cookies, Chlo. It’s…everything. Leo is so wonderful, so…perfect. And I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, you know? For him to suddenly reveal he collects toenail clippings or something equally horrifying.”
