This was not just any cake; this was the ‘Peace Offering Cake,’ intended to smooth over the minor seismic tremor that had occurred during their last outing. Penny, in her infinite wisdom, had decided a picnic would be the perfect antidote to Leo’s mild confusion about her extensive collection of novelty cat sweaters. Leo, bless his patient soul, had merely raised an eyebrow, a flicker of amusement in his eyes that Penny had immediately misinterpreted as judgment.

“You *collect* them?” he’d asked, his voice a low rumble that usually soothed her. This time, it sounded like the prelude to a lecture on sensible adult fashion choices.

“They’re… nostalgic,” Penny had stammered, clutching a particularly fluffy angora number featuring a grumpy-looking Persian. “And warm. And they have cats.”
