The third chapter had ended with Tsegba, our resident hopeless romantic, staring at his phone screen as if it were a venomous snake. "The Interception of Fate," he'd called it. Fate, it seemed, had a wicked sense of humor, and Tsegba was its punchline. He’d been so sure, so utterly, gloriously sure, that Leo Sterling was the answer to his prayers, the honey to his bitter cola. And then, *bam*. A cryptic text, a canceled date, and the looming specter of Penelope Parker, the baker of his dreams, hovering just out of reach.

Tsegba paced his apartment like a caged lion, a furry, slightly anxious lion who’d just discovered his favorite kibble had been replaced with Brussels sprouts. Leo’s text message was a masterpiece of ambiguity: “Something unexpected came up. So sorry. Can we reschedule?” Unexpected? What kind of unexpected? Did a flock of pigeons stage a coup in his apartment? Did he accidentally join a cult that only communicated through interpretive dance? Tsegba, being Tsegba, considered all plausible, and many implausible, scenarios.
