A Test of Trust
An external pressure or a minor crisis tests the trust Penny and Leo have built, forcing them to rely on each other.
Penny’s kitchen, usually a sanctuary of flour dust and the comforting hum of the oven, felt more like a battlefield. The air was thick with the acrid scent of burnt sugar, a testament to her current emotional state. Chloe, perched precariously on a stool, nursed a mug of what Penny hoped was still vaguely tea-like, her expression a mixture of concern and barely suppressed amusement.
"Seriously, Penny," Chloe began, her voice gentle but firm, "you're going to set off the smoke alarm and then we'll have the fire department here, and they'll ask if you're making artisanal charcoal briquettes."
Penny slammed a spatula down onto the counter, sending a cloud of cinnamon into the air. "It's not funny, Chloe! It's… it's a disaster! A complete and utter disaster!" Her latest attempt at Leo’s favorite lemon tart had ended up looking less like a delicate dessert and more like a fossilized frisbee. The crust was a shade of dark, unappetizing brown, and the lemon filling had curdled into a lumpy, unappealing mess.
