Penny suspected her internal dating compass had a permanent magnet attached to “disaster.” It was a rare and precious thing, then, that Leo Sterling didn’t seem to be actively steering her towards an iceberg. And, as is often the case with delightful things that seem too good to be true, Penny found herself embarking on a rigorous inspection of his every nook and cranny, searching for the tell-tale signs of a hidden flaw, a lurking cockroach, a poorly constructed facade.

Their recent venture into the world of vintage board games, a hobby of Leo’s that Penny had initially found as appealing as a root canal, had been surprisingly… fun. Leo, with his uncanny ability to recall the rules of obscure games involving cardboard tokens and dice that looked like they’d survived a minor skirmish, had managed to transform what Penny anticipated would be an evening of mind-numbing tedium into a surprisingly engaging affair. He’d explained the convoluted strategies of “The Game of Life” with the earnestness of a seasoned philosopher dissecting Plato, and Penny, despite her initial skepticism, found herself leaning in, captivated.
