Penny’s apartment, usually a sanctuary of flour dust and the comforting scent of vanilla, felt more like a chaotic whirlwind of nervous energy. Chloe, seated at the kitchen table nursing a rapidly cooling cup of tea, watched her friend with a mixture of amusement and concern. Penny was practically vibrating, flitting between the oven, the pantry, and a meticulously organized recipe binder that looked as though it had survived a minor kitchen explosion.
“Are you sure you want to bake a seven-layer opera cake for a guy you’ve been on, what, three proper dates with?” Chloe asked, her voice laced with a playful skepticism. “Wouldn’t a simple ‘you’re not a complete disaster’ card suffice?”
Penny paused mid-whisk, a dollop of egg white clinging precariously to her chin. “It’s not *just* a cake, Chloe. It’s… a peace offering. A ‘sorry I accused you of being a secret agent trying to steal my sourdough starter’ offering. And also, a ‘thank you for not running away screaming after my rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody on the karaoke machine’ offering. And, you know, a general ‘you’re pretty great and I’m trying not to mess this up’ offering.” She gestured vaguely with her whisk, narrowly missing Chloe’s head.
