Chapter 12
The Unexpected Ally
A surprising source, perhaps someone Leo knows or an acquaintance of Penny's, offers crucial insight or advice that helps Penny see things clearly.
Penny stared at her phone, the screen a blinding beacon of doom in the dimly lit kitchen. Chloe, bless her pragmatic soul, had already left for her early shift, leaving Penny to wrestle with the digital ghost of Leo’s last text. “Busy week. Talk soon.” That was it. Three measly words that had sent Penny’s overthinking circuits into overdrive, threatening to overheat and short-circuit her already fragile optimism. Busy week? What kind of busy week required a week-long radio silence? Was he secretly a spy? A competitive synchronized swimmer with a grueling training schedule? Or worse, was he just… not that into her? The latter was the most likely culprit, a familiar specter that haunted her every dating endeavor.
She sighed, the sound swallowed by the hum of the refrigerator. Her gaze drifted to the cooling rack on the counter, where a batch of slightly lopsided lemon poppy seed muffins sat, a testament to her current emotional state. Liam! Where had Liam even come from? Her brain was a veritable Bermuda Triangle of former acquaintances and fictional characters.
Suddenly, a sharp rap on her front door startled her, making her jump and nearly knock a muffin onto the floor. Who could that be at this hour? She wasn’t expecting anyone. Peeking through the peephole, her eyes widened. It wasn't Leo, nor Chloe. It was… Mr. Abernathy. The perpetually grumpy, tweed-wearing gentleman from apartment 3B, who usually communicated with Penny solely through passive-aggressive notes about her recycling habits.
