Chapter 1

Chapter 1

The author reflects on the hazy beginnings of her YouTube journey, recalling a friend who encouraged her to start a channel and the first video she posted, though much of the memory is fragmented.

I wish I could tell you I remember every detail, every click, every breath before I pressed that upload button. But the truth is, I don’t remember much. The beginning of my YouTube journey is like an old photograph left in the sun—faded at the edges, the center still holding a little color, but so much of it washed away by time.

What I do remember is a feeling. A nervous, fluttery feeling in my chest, like a bird trapped behind my ribs. I remember sitting in my room, the same room I’d spent a thousand afternoons in, but somehow it felt different that day. The desk was cluttered with a laptop, a cheap microphone I’d borrowed from a cousin, and a lamp I’d angled to try and make the lighting less harsh. My hands were sweaty, and I kept wiping them on my jeans.

And I remember my friend. She was there, sitting on the edge of my bed, her legs crossed, watching me with that patient smile she always had. She was the kind of friend who believed in you even when you didn’t believe in yourself. She’d been the one to push me, to say, “You should start a channel. You have stories to tell.” I laughed it off at first, but she kept at it, gently, like a steady drip of water until the stone finally gave way.

I don’t remember what we talked about that day. I don’t remember if we laughed or if we were both too nervous to say much. But I remember her presence, a quiet anchor in the storm of my doubt. She didn’t tell me what to say or how to act. She just sat there, and that was enough.

The first video I posted—I wish I could tell you what it was about. I think it was something simple, maybe a story from my life, or a thought I’d been turning over in my mind. But the specifics are gone, lost somewhere in the fog of those early days. What I do remember is the moment my finger hovered over the mouse, the cursor blinking over the “Upload” button. I remember taking a deep breath, the kind that fills your lungs all the way down to your belly, and then I clicked.

The screen flickered, a progress bar crawled across, and then it was done. Live. Out there in the vast, endless internet, my voice was floating, waiting for someone to hear it.

I don’t remember if I watched it back. I don’t remember if I checked for comments. I think I closed the laptop and sat there for a while, not saying anything. My friend might have said something encouraging, but I can’t recall the words. What I recall is the quiet after, the way the room felt still, like something had shifted but I couldn’t yet name it.

That was how it started. Not with a bang, not with a grand plan, but with a borrowed microphone, a friend’s belief, and a single click. The rest is a blur of videos, of trying to find my voice, of learning what it meant to share a piece of myself with strangers. But the beginning? The beginning is mostly shadows, with just a few points of light.

I think about that day sometimes, especially when I’m about to upload something new. The nerves are still there, though they’ve softened with time. But I hold onto that memory, faded as it is, as a reminder that every journey starts somewhere. Even if you don’t remember all the steps, you remember the feeling of taking the first one.

And I remember my friend. I don’t know if she knows how much that moment meant to me. We don’t talk as much now, life has a way of pulling people in different directions. But whenever I sit down to record, whenever I press that button, I feel her there, sitting on the edge of the bed, smiling.

That is the only memory I have of the start. It’s not much, but it’s mine. And maybe that’s enough.

As I write this, I realize there’s so much I don’t know about those early days. Why did I choose that first topic? Did I rehearse? Was I scared? I can’t answer those questions. But I know that I did it. I started. And that first step, however blurry, led me here.

I wonder what my friend would say if she read this. Maybe she’d laugh, maybe she’d nod. Maybe she’d remember more than I do. But I’m grateful for her, for that day, for the push that set me on a path I never expected.

So this is Chapter 1. Not a grand beginning, but an honest one. I don’t remember much, but I remember enough to know that it mattered.

And I wonder, now, what comes next. Because if the first step was this small, this fragile, then the road ahead must be filled with moments I’ve yet to forget.
