The car hummed through the dark streets of Vilnius, past shuttered shops and empty intersections. Andrius drove with one hand on the wheel, the other resting on a pistol tucked into his belt. The gray-eyed woman sat beside me in the back seat, her grip on my hand loosening but not letting go. The folder lay across my lap, heavy with the weight of what it contained.
No one spoke for a long time. The only sound was the engine and the occasional crackle of gravel under the tires. I stared at the back of Andrius's head, at the grey hair and the scar on his neck, and tried to reconcile the man who had just told me the field officer was dead with the man who had been my only hope minutes ago.
'Where is this safe house?' I asked finally.
