Chapter 6
The protagonist receives a text demanding they bring the audit files to the printing house by midnight or the field officer dies. After a tense walk through the forest, they reach a village, catch a bus to Vilnius, and arrive at the old Soviet printing house on Giedraičių Street. Inside, a woman who works for a newspaper confirms the trap but agrees to help. As they begin to plan, a noise from the back room suggests they are not alone.
I stood in the forest, the phone glowing in my hand. The message was short, direct, and final.
We have the field officer. Bring the files to the printing house by midnight, or he dies.
I read it three times, each time hoping the words would rearrange themselves into something less terrible. They didn't. The field officer had been captured. The kanjbsls had him, and they wanted the evidence I was carrying. The same evidence he had given his life—or at least his freedom—to protect.
