Chapter 6

Chapter 6: The Hour Between

The narrator returns to the field at twilight, following Juokas's final instruction. Using both keys and the compass at the tree, they unlock a buried container that holds a letter from M. and an old photograph. The letter explains that the phrase 'Undone to make' was a promise: the thread was always meant to close when the seeker understood the pattern. The narrator realizes the mystery was not about finding answers but about completing a circle of connection. They leave the field with a sense of peace, the thread finally whole.

The drive back to the field felt different. The road was the same—narrow, lined with overgrown hedges and the occasional slumped fence post—but the light had shifted. It was late afternoon, the sun still high enough to cast long shadows, but there was a softness to the air, a stillness that came before twilight. I checked the dashboard clock. I had time. The hour when the sun and moon share the sky was still an hour away, maybe a little more, depending on the season. I had looked it up: the moment between day and night, when both orbs could be seen at once, a brief window of balanced light. That was when I needed to be at the tree.

I pulled off onto the gravel track that led to the field, the car bouncing over ruts I remembered from childhood. The grass had grown tall, pale and dry, brushing against the undercarriage. I stopped at the edge of the field and got out. The tree stood in the center, unchanged. Its branches spread wide, the bark rough and familiar. I walked toward it, the compass in one hand, the two keys in my pocket. The needle had been pointing east since I left the building, but now, as I approached the trunk, it wavered. I stopped and held it flat in my palm. The needle spun slowly, then settled, pointing directly at the base of the tree.

I knelt. The grass was thick here, tangled with clover and fallen leaves. I pushed it aside, revealing the earth beneath. The soil was loose, as if it had been disturbed recently. I dug with my fingers, the dirt cool and damp. A few inches down, my hand struck something hard. I brushed away more soil and uncovered a metal box, about the size of a shoebox, rusted and crusted with dirt. It had a small lock, shaped like a leaf—exactly like the keyholes I had seen before.
