Grumbles' Grumpy Apology

Lekgetho G stood on the podium, the glittering trophy held high, reflecting the sunlight into a thousand dancing rainbows. The crowd, a sea of proud parents and cheering classmates, roared its approval. He’d done it! He’d won the Genius Games! But it wasn’t just the trophy that made his heart thump like a drum solo. It was the feeling. The feeling of winning, yes, but more than that, the feeling of having made everyone laugh.

He’d seen their faces during the final challenge, the ‘Wobbly Tower of Wonder’. As the other contestants painstakingly stacked blocks, trying to create the most stable, yet wobbliest, structure, Lekgetho had gone in a completely different direction. He hadn’t just built a tower; he’d built a personality. His tower had legs, wobbly, uneven legs made of brightly coloured cardboard tubes. It had arms, made from pipe cleaners that bent and swayed. And on top, a little flag that flapped with every gust of wind, as if cheering itself on. When it was his turn, he’d nudged it gently, and the tower had performed a ridiculous, lopsided jig, wobbling precariously before settling back into its own unique, unstable balance. The whole hall had erupted in laughter, a joyous wave that washed over Lekgetho and made him grin from ear to ear.

Now, as he looked out at the cheering faces, he saw a familiar, usually scowling one, peeking out from the crowd. Grumbles. The boy who’d tried to hide his favourite orange beanie, the one he called his ‘thinking cap’. Grumbles looked… different. The usual frown lines on his forehead seemed a little less deep, and his arms, usually crossed defensively, were relaxed at his sides. Lekgetho, ever the diplomat, even when he was a champion, gave him a small, friendly nod.
