The quiet hum of the refrigerator was the loudest sound in the house, a stark contrast to the cacophony that had exploded on Monday morning. Lily sat at the kitchen table, the remnants of a half-eaten toast growing cold on her plate, her gaze fixed on the worn linoleum floor. Maya’s screams, her frantic scratching, the chilling pronouncements about their mother and money – the echoes lingered, a persistent, unsettling melody. It had been three days since that jarring moment, three days of Maya’s deepening withdrawal, her eyes darting nervously at shadows, her whispers often fading into unintelligible murmurs. Lily’s heart ached with a dull, persistent throb, a mixture of worry and a desperate need to understand. What had happened on that phone? What unseen force had clawed its way into her sister’s mind?
Lily knew she couldn’t just sit and wait for answers to materialize. Maya was her sister, her confidante, her anchor in a world that had already taken so much from them. She had to do something. She had to follow the threads, however tangled and faint they might be.
Her first thought was Maya’s friends. Sarah, with her bright, quick laughter, and Chloe, always so thoughtful and observant. They’d been with Maya that morning, playing in the garden as they always did. Lily found Sarah on the porch swing, her usual effervescence dimmed, her eyes holding a shadow of the same unease that Lily felt.
