The Lumina’s gentle nudges had grown more insistent, its luminous fur brushing against my cheek with a warmth that felt less like comfort and more like urgency. I had been tracing the edges of a shadowy grove, a place I’d hastily sketched in the corner of my paper, dismissing it as mere background. Now, it pulsed with a life I hadn’t intended, a darkness that seemed to suck the very colour from the air.

“What is it?” I whispered, my voice barely a breath against the Lumina’s soft, feathery ear. It tilted its head, its large, multi-faceted eyes reflecting the dappled sunlight filtering through the impossibly tall, emerald-green trees. But there was a flicker of something akin to fear in their depths, a stark contrast to the serene confidence it had shown just moments before.

It didn’t answer with words, of course. The Lumina communicated through a symphony of subtle shifts in its luminescence, the gentle ruffling of its wings, and the faintest tremors that ran through its body. Today, those tremors spoke of unease. It nudged me again, this time towards the very grove I had been contemplating.
