A Test of the Heart
To earn her passage home, Lily must undertake a final task, proving she has learned the lessons of creation, responsibility, and the true meaning of her art.
The sun, a molten gold coin I’d painted myself, hung lower in the sky now, casting long, dancing shadows that stretched like playful fingers across the sapphire grass. Elder Maeve’s words still hummed in my ears, a gentle echo against the rustle of the shimmering leaves. “A test of the heart, Lily. Not of strength, but of understanding.” I traced the smooth, cool surface of a lumina feather I’d found earlier, its iridescence shifting from rose to emerald with every tiny movement. It felt impossibly real, yet I knew, deep down, that it was born from the tip of my crayon, a smudge of imagination given form.
The Lumina, my Lumina, sat beside me, its luminous eyes, the colour of twilight, fixed on mine. It hadn’t spoken in words, not really, but I understood it. It understood me. It had shown me the jagged edges of this land, the places where the colours had faded, the shadows that weren't quite as friendly as I’d intended. It had shown me the echoes of my own unfinished lines, the parts of my dream that were still waiting to be filled in. And now, this. A test.
“What is it I have to do?” I whispered, the question directed as much to myself as to the creature beside me. The Lumina nudged my hand with its soft, feathered head, then rose, a silent invitation. It turned towards the Whispering Falls, the place where the water shimmered with all the colours I’d ever imagined, a liquid rainbow cascading down moss-covered rocks. That was where Elder Maeve had told me to go.
