The chill that had settled in my bones since Julian’s veiled threat lingered, a persistent shadow that even the warmest sunlight couldn't quite dispel. He’d been unusually solicitous since our tense conversation by the fountain, his words smooth as polished marble, but his eyes held a glint that was anything but reassuring. It was the look of a predator, assessing its prey. I tried to shake off the unease, to remind myself of the life we were building, the future he’d painted for us so vividly. But the memory of his grip on my wrist, the unnerving stillness in his gaze, kept replaying in my mind.

My mother’s words, once dismissed as the ramblings of a woman burdened by her own secrets, now echoed with a newfound urgency. "Some doors, Elara, are best left unopened." I hadn't understood then, but now, staring at the ornate invitation to a charity gala Julian had insisted we attend, the words felt like a premonition. It was a high-society affair, a glittering showcase of the city’s elite, and Julian would be at the center of it all, his charm a dazzling cloak for whatever lay beneath.

I found myself staring out the window of my studio, the city lights a distant, blurred tapestry. My fingers traced the condensation on the glass, each swirl a question mark. Was I truly happy? Was this the life I wanted? The questions felt foreign, almost treasonous, when directed at Julian Thorne, the man who had swept me off my feet, the man I was to marry.
