Elara traced the rim of her mug, the warmth a small comfort against the chill that had settled deep within her. The betrayal still stung, a fresh wound that throbbed with every memory of Mrs. Albright’s saccharine smile.

“She was good,” Liam said, his voice low, as if reading her thoughts. He sat across from her, his gaze steady and reassuring. “Albright was Thorne’s most trusted operative. Placed right under your nose, disguised as a friend.”

Elara nodded, a lump forming in her throat. “I… I trusted her. She was so kind, so helpful.” The words felt hollow, tainted by the knowledge of Albright’s duplicity. She remembered the way Albright had so readily offered advice, the gentle counsel that had now been revealed as a carefully orchestrated manipulation.
