Elara traced the rim of her chipped mug, the warmth a small comfort against the chill that had settled deep within her bones. Liam sat across from her, his usual easy smile replaced by a weary gravity. The city lights, once a symbol of glittering possibility, now seemed like a thousand watchful eyes, each one a potential threat.

“He’s not going to stop, is he?” Elara’s voice was barely a whisper, the words catching in her throat. The betrayal had been a physical blow, the revelation that Marcus, the man who had seemed like a lifeline, was in Julian’s pocket, a puppet master pulling strings she hadn't even known existed.

Liam reached across the narrow table, his calloused fingers covering hers. His touch was solid, grounding. “No. But neither are we.” He squeezed her hand gently. “Marcus was a setback, but not the end. We knew it was a possibility.”
