The air in the small, anonymous cafe was thick with the scent of stale coffee and desperation. Elara traced the rim of her chipped mug, her gaze fixed on the condensation that had gathered on its surface. Beside her, Liam’s hand rested on the table, a steady, reassuring presence. The ‘betrayal’ they had faced, the one that had almost cost them everything, still echoed in the silence between them. Julian’s trap had been cunning, a spiderweb spun with threads of misplaced trust, but they had, against all odds, broken free.
“He’ll be looking for us,” Elara whispered, the words catching in her throat. The weight of Julian’s obsession felt like a physical burden, an invisible chain still tethered to her. Even in their temporary sanctuary, the fear was a constant companion.
Liam squeezed her hand. “He’s predictable, Elara. He thinks he’s won, that he’s isolated us. But that’s where he’s wrong.” His eyes, usually warm and kind, now held a steely glint. “He underestimated you. He underestimated us.”
