The scent of lavender and old paper always clung to my mother’s study, a comforting aroma that had, until recently, been a sanctuary. Now, it felt like a suffocating blanket. Sunlight, usually so cheerful, slanted through the tall windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air like tiny, restless spirits. I sat opposite my mother, Eleanor, her face a familiar landscape of gentle lines and reserved smiles, but today, those lines seemed etched deeper, her smile tighter, like a mask that was beginning to crack.

“Mother,” I began, my voice softer than I intended, a ripple in the heavy silence. “About Julian’s family… you never really said much. And his sudden appearance in Father’s life, and then mine… it all feels so… coincidental.”

She fiddled with a delicate porcelain teacup, her fingers tracing the painted roses as if seeking answers within their delicate petals. “Julian Thorne is a… resourceful man, Elara. He’s made a name for himself.” Her voice was carefully neutral, devoid of the warmth that usually softened her tone when she spoke of anything concerning me.
