The air in the safe house was thick with the scent of old paper and a faint, metallic tang that Elara couldn't quite place. Liam had secured it himself, a nondescript apartment on the other side of the city, far from the gilded cage Julian had so carefully constructed. He’d assured her it was secure, a place where they could finally breathe. But breathing felt like a luxury Elara hadn't earned yet. She traced the rim of a chipped mug, the lukewarm tea doing little to warm the chill that had settled deep within her bones. The betrayal still stung, a raw wound that Julian’s calculated cruelty had inflicted. Mrs. Gable, her trusted housekeeper, a woman whose loyalty Elara had never questioned, had been the one to unlock the door, her eyes holding a flicker of something that had twisted Elara’s stomach into knots. It had been a moment of utter devastation, a confirmation that Julian’s reach extended further than she had dared to imagine.

Liam sat opposite her, his gaze steady, a quiet strength emanating from him. He understood. He’d seen the darkness too, from a different angle perhaps, but with an equally keen eye. He’d been her anchor in the storm, the one constant in a world that had suddenly become a kaleidoscope of deceit. “He knew you were coming here,” Liam said, his voice low, almost a murmur. “He must have anticipated some move after the confrontation.”

Elara nodded, the weight of his words pressing down on her. “Mrs. Gable… she’s been with my family for thirty years. I never…” Her voice trailed off, the disbelief still a palpable force within her.
