The sterile white walls of the safe house seemed to amplify Elara’s racing thoughts. Liam sat opposite her, his usual calm demeanor a stark contrast to the tempest raging within her. The betrayal by Marcus, Julian’s most trusted confidante, still stung, a fresh wound in an already painful landscape. It had been a near miss, a hair’s breadth from capture, and the chilling realization that Julian’s reach extended so far, so deep, had left her trembling.
“He knew we were coming,” Elara whispered, her voice raspy. “Marcus… he must have been feeding Julian information all along.” The thought of Marcus’s easy smile, his seemingly genuine concern, now curdled into a sickening deception.
Liam reached across the small table, his hand covering hers. His touch was solid, grounding. “We can’t dwell on that now, Elara. We’re safe. And we have enough. More than enough.” He gestured to the folder on the table between them. Inside lay the meticulously organized evidence they had managed to secure during their frantic escape: financial records, encrypted communications, even a signed confession from a disgruntled former associate of Julian’s, obtained through Liam’s contacts.
