Elara traced the condensation ring her glass had left on the scarred tabletop, her gaze unfocused. The adrenaline of their daring raid on Julian’s private study had long since faded, replaced by a gnawing exhaustion and the weight of the USB drive clutched in her hand. It contained everything – the offshore accounts, the shell corporations, the coded messages that painted Julian Thorne not as a titan of industry, but a puppet master of the underworld.
Liam sat opposite her, his usual easygoing demeanor replaced by a grim intensity. He’d been a rock, a constant presence through the maelstrom of the past few weeks, but even his steady resolve seemed tested by the sheer scale of Julian’s depravity. “Are you sure about this, Elara?” he asked, his voice low. “Going public, I mean. He’ll retaliate. He’ll go after us, after your mother.”
Elara finally lifted her eyes to meet his, and in them, a flicker of the old fire returned, tempered by a newfound steel. “I’m sure, Liam. We have the proof. My mother’s confession, the ledger, this drive… it’s all there. He’s ruined lives, built his empire on suffering. We can’t let him get away with it.” She felt a phantom chill, the memory of Julian’s icy gaze, his possessive grip, resurfacing. But this time, it didn’t paralyze her. It fueled her.
