The air in the safe house hummed with a fragile peace. Sunlight, filtered through the grimy panes of a nondescript apartment window, illuminated dust motes dancing in the stillness. Elara traced the condensation rings left by Liam’s coffee mug on the worn wooden table, a small smile playing on her lips. It had been days since the explosive confrontation, days since Julian’s reign of terror had been brought to a crashing halt. The world outside was still reeling, the newspapers filled with sensational headlines and bewildered pronouncements. But here, in this quiet corner, a different kind of unfolding was happening.
Liam entered from the small kitchen, a fresh pot of coffee in hand, his movements easy and familiar. He met Elara’s gaze, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “You’re quiet this morning,” he observed, his voice a low rumble that had become a comforting constant in her life.
Elara shrugged, a lightness in her shoulders she hadn’t felt in months. “Just… processing, I suppose. It still feels a little surreal.” She looked down at her hands, no longer adorned with Julian’s ostentatious ring, but bare, strong. “I never thought I’d see the day.”
