Liam sat opposite her, his brow furrowed as he studied the documents spread between them. The confession from her mother, Eleanor, had been a torrent of revelations, a dark tapestry woven with threads of desperation and a twisted sense of protection. It explained the Vance family’s precarious financial standing, the generations of debt that had made them vulnerable, and how Julian Thorne, with his insatiable ambition, had seen Elara not as a bride, but as a pawn in his grand scheme.
“He always planned to use the inheritance, didn’t he?” Elara’s voice was a fragile whisper, the last vestiges of her former naivete crumbling with each passing moment. “He knew about the… the irregularities in our family’s accounts. He saw it as an opportunity.”
Liam nodded, his gaze steady. “More than an opportunity, Elara. It was a foundation. He built his empire on the back of your family’s struggles. Your mother, she tried to protect you, but she was caught in his web too.” He tapped a section of Eleanor’s confession. “This confirms it. The offshore accounts, the shell corporations… it all traces back to Thorne. And the ‘betrayal’ you experienced… it wasn’t an accident. He anticipated your move.”
