The air in the makeshift safe house, a nondescript apartment on the other side of the city, hummed with a nervous energy. Elara sat by the window, tracing the condensation with her fingertip, her gaze lost in the distant, indifferent lights. The adrenaline that had coursed through her during the escape, the sheer terror of Julian’s unmasked fury, had finally receded, leaving behind a hollow exhaustion. Liam was a calming presence, his quiet movements around the small kitchen a balm to her frayed nerves. He brewed them both tea, the scent of chamomile a gentle contrast to the acrid smell of fear that still clung to her.
“He won’t stop,” she murmured, the words barely a whisper. “He’ll find me, Liam.” The possessiveness in Julian’s eyes as he’d cornered her, the chilling calm with which he’d laid out his threats, replayed in her mind like a broken record. He had been so sure of himself, so utterly confident in his ability to control her, to crush her.
Liam placed a steaming mug in her hands, his touch firm and reassuring. “We won’t let him,” he said, his voice low and steady. “We have the evidence, Elara. Enough to put him away for good. He’s cornered now, even if he doesn’t realize it yet.” He sat beside her, his shoulder brushing hers, a silent offer of support.
