The quiet that settled after the storm was almost deafening. Julian’s reign of terror had ended, not with a bang, but with the quiet implosion of his carefully constructed empire. The news had spread like wildfire, each report a fresh wave of disbelief and relief washing over me. It felt surreal, like waking from a nightmare only to find the sun shining, the air clean. My mother, her face etched with a weariness that transcended years, had finally unburdened herself of the truth. The weight of her confession, so long held captive, seemed to lift a little from her shoulders, and in turn, from mine.

Sometimes, it was enough to feel the warmth of his hand brushing mine, the understanding in his gaze. He’d recount stories of his childhood, of places he’d seen, his voice a gentle melody that soothed the lingering anxieties. He spoke of a life lived on his own terms, a stark contrast to the gilded cage I’d been trapped in.

“You’re healing, Elara,” he murmured one afternoon, his eyes tracing the delicate curve of a rose petal. “I can see it.”
