Chapter 6
The Kindly Observer
Arthur Finch, a local librarian, notices Eleanor's preoccupation. His gentle presence offers a moment of calm, a reminder of the real world.
Eleanor tucked her headphones more snugly, the world outside shrinking to a dull hum. The library, usually a sanctuary of hushed whispers and the comforting scent of aged paper, felt different today. It was a place she’d always found solace, a haven from the often-too-loud realities of life. But lately, even the familiar shelves seemed to hold a strange new resonance, a subtle shift that mirrored the unsettling narratives unfolding in her ears.
She found herself drawn to the quiet corner by the large bay window, the one that always seemed to catch the afternoon sun just so. It was here, amidst the gentle rustle of turning pages and the distant murmur of the librarian’s desk, that she often lost herself in the captivating, sometimes chilling, tales spun by Detective Miller. Today’s episode, however, was particularly unnerving. The meticulous detail with which he described the abandoned greenhouse, the peculiar placement of discarded gardening gloves, the faint scent of something metallic… it all prickled at the edges of her awareness. She’d almost flinched when he spoke of a sudden gust of wind rattling loose panes of glass, a sound so like the one she’d heard just yesterday, rustling through the overgrown bushes at the back of her garden.
A soft clearing of a throat nearby made her jump, her hand flying to her chest. She pulled out one earbud, her heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs. Standing a few feet away was Arthur Finch, the library’s head librarian. He was a man of quiet habits and gentle eyes, his presence as unassuming as the worn spines of the books he so lovingly curated. He held a small stack of returned novels, his expression soft with a question.
