Chapter 5: The Lavender Trap
Janice spent the night on the kitchen floor, too paranoid to move. The slippers lay on the coffee table like a threat wrapped in plush. Every creak of the building—a door closing, a toilet flushing—sounded like Lila’s heels. She didn’t sleep. She didn’t eat. She just stared at the ceiling and rehearsed her call to the police.
At dawn, she dialed. A tired-sounding officer listened to her story about a coworker with a foot fetish who had broken into her apartment, drugged her, and left creepy slippers. The officer asked if there were any signs of forced entry. Janice looked at the deadbolt—still intact. The kitchen chair under the doorknob—undisturbed. “No,” she admitted. “But she was here. I know it.”
The officer sighed. “Ms. Henderson, if there’s no physical evidence of a break-in, we can’t issue a restraining order without a direct threat. Have you considered talking to HR?”
