Chapter 7
A Glimpse of the Cycle
Through her journaling and Jaci's quiet wisdom, Laila starts to see a recurring pattern. Events, emotions, and challenges seem to echo past experiences, hinting at a cyclical nature of life.
The faint glow of Laila’s desk lamp cast long, dancing shadows across her room, a familiar theatrical performance that usually soothed her. Tonight, however, the shadows felt like grasping hands, pulling her deeper into the swirling vortex of her thoughts. Her current journal lay open, a testament to her relentless need to capture every fleeting emotion, every stinging memory. The pages were a chaotic landscape of hurried script, smudged ink, and the occasional tear stain that had blurred the words into abstract art. She traced the lines of a particularly frantic entry from weeks ago, a torrent of fear and helplessness that had threatened to drown her. And then, almost against her will, her eyes drifted to a passage written even earlier, a description of a similar, albeit less intense, wave of anxiety that had crested and, eventually, receded.
A shiver traced its way down her spine, not of cold, but of a dawning, unsettling recognition. It was like finding a familiar melody in a cacophony of noise, a recurring motif in a symphony of emotional turmoil. She flipped back further, her fingers flying across the pages with a newfound urgency. There, nestled between entries detailing the sting of a harsh word from a classmate and the gnawing ache of loneliness, was another echo. A description of feeling small and insignificant, a feeling she’d attributed to a particular incident at the time, but now, in the stark light of her present, seemed to be a recurring whisper.
Her breath hitched. It wasn’t just one or two instances; it was a tapestry woven with threads that kept reappearing, re-dyed in slightly different hues, but undeniably the same pattern. The exhilaration of a small victory followed by the crushing weight of expectation. The comfort of a fleeting connection dissolved by the inevitable drift. The sharp, sudden pang of loss that, while never truly gone, seemed to resurface with a predictable rhythm. It was as if her life were a record that had skipped and was now playing the same few bars over and over, each time with a subtle variation that made her question her sanity.
