The worn leather of Laila’s journal felt like a familiar skin, a second layer to her own, less resilient one. Chapter five. She’d titled it, in her mind at least, “Jaci’s Gentle Nudge.” It was a strange title, she thought, for someone who could sometimes feel like a whirlwind, all sharp edges and sudden gusts of wind. Each setback, each disappointment, each moment of feeling utterly adrift, seemed to add another layer to the oppressive blanket.
