Chapter 4: The Perfect Town
Elizabeth and Beatrice take a shortcut through the idyllic town of Harmonyville, where they are roped into Founder's Day festivities. There, they discover the town is secretly controlled by the Community Betterment Group, but a disgruntled former member named Wally gives them a crucial clue about Gene's location and a way to avoid Pemberton's surveillance.
The convertible hummed along a winding back road, headlights cutting through a wall of crickets and darkness. Beatrice drove with one hand on the wheel, the other holding a thermos of coffee. The dog—whose name, Elizabeth had learned, was Truffles—snored in the back seat, a small dust mop of contentment.
"We should make good time," Beatrice said, slurping. "This road loops around and meets up with the highway about thirty miles east of Oakwood. But I know a cut-through that shaves off an hour. It goes through a town called Harmonyville."
"Harmonyville?" Elizabeth repeated. "That sounds like a theme park."
