Chapter 10: The Boat That Wasn't a Boat
Elizabeth, Gene, and Margaret flee the Pemberton compound with the USB, pursued by a helicopter. They reach Margaret's sister's place expecting a boat, only to find a broken-down houseboat and a sister who is more interested in her reality TV show than their escape. After a series of comic mishaps, they improvise a plan using inflatable pool toys and a canoe, only to discover the helicopter was a decoy—Pemberton's men are waiting on the water. They are captured, but the USB is safely hidden in Truffles' collar back at the cabin.
The sedan tore down the winding road, headlights carving a narrow tunnel through the dark. Behind them, the helicopter’s searchlight swept across the trees like a restless god. Margaret gripped the wheel with both hands, her lips pressed into a thin line, every so often muttering something under her breath that sounded suspiciously like a curse from a foreign language she probably didn’t know.
“How far?” Gene asked, clutching the USB drive as if it were a winning lottery ticket.
“Ten minutes, if the road holds,” Margaret said.
