The world had always felt like a place where I was perpetually on the outside, peering through a thick pane of glass. The laughter of others, their easy conversations, the way they brushed shoulders in passing – it all seemed to belong to a different species, one I observed with a mixture of longing and profound bewilderment. My own existence had been a quiet affair, a series of hushed movements and careful silences, punctuated by the ever-present thrum of fear and the heavy cloak of shame. I had grown adept at shrinking myself, at blending into the background, a skill honed by necessity, but one that left me feeling hollow, a mere echo of a person.

It was during one of these solitary wanderings, a familiar ache settling in my chest like a cold stone, that I first noticed *them*. They were sitting on a park bench, not the usual kind that felt too exposed, but one tucked away beneath the sprawling branches of an old oak tree, a place I often retreated to when the weight of the day became too much. I had seen them before, a fleeting presence in the periphery of my life, but never had our paths truly converged. They were reading, their brow furrowed in concentration, a gentle smile playing on their lips as they turned a page.
