The weeks after the scare settled into a rhythm of quiet anticipation. Mornings started with the same ritual: a prenatal vitamin chased by a glass of water, a hand on my belly, and a whispered good morning to the tiny life growing inside me. The spotting had stopped, and with each passing day, the fear loosened its grip. The partner—my anchor, my constant—left for work with a kiss on my forehead and a promise to call during lunch. I spent my days reading about baby milestones, folding tiny onesies, and adding to the shoebox under the bed: a receipt from the pharmacy, a dried leaf from our walk in the park, a note with the list of things we wanted to teach our child.

One afternoon, while sorting through a pile of hand-me-down clothes from a friend, I found a small sweater with a faded elephant on the front. I held it up, imagining our baby wrapped in its softness. The partner came home early that day, his face flushed with excitement. "I found something," he said, pulling a small wooden elephant from behind his back. It was hand-painted, with a tiny trunk raised in salute. "For the nursery. I saw it in a shop window and couldn't resist."

I laughed, the sound light and genuine. "You're going to fill this room with elephants before the baby even arrives."
