He started to lose interest in me, calling me worthless, telling me that if a man partner begs him for anything, it's a turn and even my so called mother took his side in everything

The first time he called me worthless, I was standing in the kitchen, stirring a pot of porridge for our son. The words hit me like a slap I didn’t see coming, and I froze, the wooden spoon suspended mid-air. He was sitting at the table, scrolling through his phone, his voice flat and matter-of-fact, as if he were commenting on the weather. I turned to look at him, waiting for a flicker of a smile, a sign that he was joking. But his eyes never lifted from the screen.

“You heard me,” he said, still not looking up. “If a woman has to beg her man for anything—time, money, attention—she’s already lost. It’s a turn-off. A complete turn-off.”

I wanted to remind him that I hadn’t begged. I had asked—asked if he could help me with the electricity bill that was sitting on the counter, yellow and threatening. But the word beg had already lodged itself in my chest like a splinter. I said nothing. I just stirred the porridge until it thickened into a paste I couldn’t swallow.
