The Gap Between Us That Changes Our Family Conversation Very Easily

The silence between us had grown so familiar that I almost forgot what it felt like to fill it with easy chatter. It wasn't loud or angry, this quiet. It was a slow, creeping thing, like moss spreading over stone, soft and almost invisible until one day you look down and realize the ground beneath you has changed completely.

It started, I think, with the little things. He would come home from work and instead of asking about my day, he'd ask about the baby's feeding schedule, about whether the laundry was done, about what time the Wi-Fi bill was due. Practical questions. Safe questions. The kind that kept us moving forward without ever really looking at each other.

I tried to ignore it at first. I told myself that this was just what life became after children, after bills, after years of scraping by. We were tired. We were stretched thin. Of course the romance would fade a little. Of course the conversations would become more about logistics than love.
