I dropped out of high school because of my pregnancy
The morning I decided to leave, the hallways felt longer than they ever had before. I remember the fluorescent lights humming overhead, the way my backpack strap dug into my shoulder, the faint smell of floor wax and stale cafeteria pizza. I was almost two months along, and every step I took felt like a confession.
I'd been going through the motions for weeks. Sitting in the back of Mr. Delgado's history class, my notebook open to a page I never wrote on, my hand resting on the curve of my belly beneath the desk. The whispers started early—they always do—but by then I'd learned to let them wash over me like static.
That morning, I stopped at my locker and stared at the combination lock like I'd never opened it before. The numbers blurred. I pressed my forehead against the cold metal and breathed.
