The first time I saw him, it was at the Saturday market, the one that spilled over three blocks near the old train station. I was haggling over a basket of peaches, and he backed into me, his elbow catching my shoulder as he turned to apologize to someone else. He spun around, flustered, and the peaches I'd been holding tumbled onto the cobblestones. I watched them roll, watched him drop to his knees to gather them, and when he looked up, his cheeks were the same dusty pink as the fruit.

"I'm so sorry," he said, and his voice was low and earnest, like a confession.

I laughed. I couldn't help it. There was something about the way he held out the bruised peaches, his palm open, his eyes full of genuine regret, that made the whole world feel lighter.
