Chapter 12

Episode 12

Growth from 1 month to 10 months

7 min read

The first month blurred into a haze of feedings and diaper changes, of sleep stolen in two-hour increments and the strange, wild joy of watching our son’s face scrunch in concentration as he nursed. He was a tiny, wrinkled creature with his father’s dark eyes and my stubborn chin, and I fell in love with him a thousand times a day—every time he curled his fingers around mine, every time he made that soft, hiccupping sound after a feeding.

By the second month, he began to truly see us. His gaze would track my face as I moved around the room, and the first time he smiled—a real, gummy, intentional smile—I cried. I called my partner at work, my voice breaking. “He smiled at me. He really smiled.” There was a pause on the other end, and then a quiet, choked laugh. “I’ll be home soon,” he said. And when he walked through the door, he knelt beside the bassinet and whispered, “Hey, little man. I heard you did something amazing today.” Our son responded with a yawn, and we both laughed, the sound filling the small apartment like light.

The third month brought the first tentative roll from back to belly. I was in the kitchen, making a cup of tea, when I heard a grunt and then a triumphant squeal. I spun around to find him on his stomach, head lifted, eyes wide with shock and pride. “You did it!” I scooped him up, kissing his forehead. “You’re a genius.” My partner, home early that day, came running from the bedroom. “What happened? Is he okay?” I handed him the baby. “He rolled over. Our son is a prodigy.” He held our son close, his face soft with wonder. “Of course he is. He’s got your brains.”
