Mr. Abernathy's Bewilderment
A well-meaning neighbor, Mr. Abernathy, witnesses Seraphina's strange behavior, becoming an unwitting pawn in her performances.
The afternoon sun, usually a benevolent presence filtering through the lace curtains, felt like an interrogator’s spotlight today. I was confined to the sitting room, a gilded cage where the air itself seemed to hum with Seraphina’s unspoken directives. She’d declared it a ‘Day of Harmonious Stillness,’ which, in Seraphina-speak, translated to a silent, agonizing vigil while she practiced her interpretive dance of existential dread in the conservatory. My own stillness was less harmonious and more the coiled tension of a spring about to snap.
Then, the doorbell chimed, a sound so rare it startled the dust motes into a frantic ballet. Seraphina, mid-pirouette, froze, her face contorting into a mask of practiced surprise. She straightened her silk robe, a garment that seemed woven from moonlight and menace, and glided towards the entrance, her footsteps unnervingly silent.
I crept to the edge of the sitting room, peeking through the gap in the heavy velvet drapes. The visitor was Mr. Abernathy, our neighbor from number 17. He was a man whose existence seemed dedicated to the meticulous care of his prize-winning petunias and the unwavering belief that the world operated on a predictable, polite rhythm. He clutched a small, potted geranium, its leaves a vibrant, almost defiant green.
